Monkey Style

Monkey style Kung Fu is a very acrobatic style of kung fu. It is one of my favorite styles. There are rolls and flips and is simply a vicious fighting style. There are bone breaks and clawing the eyes. I also love the monkey style because of the mischievous  spirit of the monkey. I love to mess with people when I spar.

I usually use this style when I am sparring people who are very tall. I get low to the ground and I roll around some. The monkey stance disguises my distance from the person i am sparring allowing for me to hit the person i am sparring when they don't think that I can reach them. When I am low to the ground while sparring a tall person it makes their arms almost useless and then I mostly only have to deal with kicks and those are very easy to see coming when they are right in your face. I one time was sparring one of our second degree black belts and as he threw a punch I grabbed his wrist. He then decided to throw a kick and I dodged that and pulled his arm between his legs. I swept both of his feet out from under him at this point knocking him to the ground and maybe embarrassing a little, but he has a good sense of humor and let it roll off his back pretty easily. Good times.

I will often take a forward monkey stance to lure an opponent in. It is easy to shift from a forward monkey stance to a backward one. This allows for a lot of momentum to be put into a monkey flip kick into the groin or chest. A monkey flip kick is a unique kick where you flip your leg up and to the side.  It's the same way you would kick someone in the butt if they were walking beside you. Not the best description so sorry if you aren't sure what I am talking about.

The important thing about any style is to have a blast doing it. If you enjoy a brutal art that is full of acrobatic moves and a mischievous spirit then monkey style might be for you.
